Rebuild

Houses burn down
Every day
And people mourn
And people rebuild

Mourn and
Rebuild
I can do that

But where
Do I
Rebuild

Not in same place
Where disaster struck
That place
That life, that marriage
Is no longer
Available

It has to be
Somewhere
Else

And what
Do I
Rebuild

Not a house
Designed exactly
Like the one lost
Those plans no longer exist
The new house must be
Different

Different place
Different house
I can do that

But when
Do I
Rebuild

Seems like wasted effort
To rebuild anything
Until I’m sure
The fire is out

And how
Can I ever
Be sure
Of
A place safe enough
Plans solid enough
A time right enough
To avoid future disaster

The answer is
I can never
Be sure
Of that

Rebuilding
Anything
Anywhere
Anytime
Will always
Involve
Risk

And I guess
That’s always been true
Though I’ve never
Had to acknowledge it
Before
